Watch Shadow Creek’s Shawn Jones smash the backboard during a game

Shawn Jones has had plenty of spectacular dunks before, but Friday night was the first he finished that ended up putting shards of glass in his arm.

In the opening minutes of the Sharks game at Alief Hastings, the 6-foot-6 Jones, who is committed to Texas State, grabbed a rebound off a missed 3-pointer from Cam Amboree and threw a dunk that shattered the panel and sent glass flying everywhere.

“Cam filmed it and it looked like it was going well, so I just timed it perfectly,” Jones told Matt Musil of KHOU Sports. “My big one was aiming for the rebound, I just ripped him from where he was and dunked him. I didn’t know I broke the rim. I looked at the rim, and it was just exciting.”

Jones, who was not injured but said he had shards of glass on his arm, said he had never felt anything like this during a dunk and had never actually didn’t realize what had happened at first.

“It was weird when I dunked it,” Jones told Musil. “(Usually) you can feel when the rim is shaking or not going anywhere, but I felt like I was going through the air or something. I was like, ‘What?’ Then I looked up and saw the ledge on the ground and glass everywhere. All my teammates ran onto the field, they were all around me, the whole team. It was just exciting. I was pumped up for real.

After a delay, the teams were able to complete the game, which Shadow Creek won 79-51. The Sharks (19-2) — led by Jones and Amboree, who is committed to Oral Roberts — are ranked 16th in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.
