Hit it at the cabin in Judy Creek

The Double Wide Duo will perform this weekend at The Cabin at Judy Creek.

The acoustic duo includes Ryan and Nick of Johnny Rock-itt & the Double Wide Symphony, one of St. Louis’ earliest cover bands. They will play 80s, 90s and country music starting at 6 p.m. Friday at The Cabin, 3730 S. State Route 157, in Glen Carbon.

This rustic tavern, owned by Justin Pickering, is a treat inside, serving craft beers, cocktails, and simple fare. The full-service bar offers a rotating menu of seasonal craft beers on tap, canned beer, wine, and craft cocktails. To complete the selection of drinks, a menu of simple dishes based on local products is offered in the form of light snacks or hearty meals.

Pickering, a veteran of the restaurant and service industries, said he spent many nights enjoying drinks and eclectic conversation at the Judy Inn. When the opportunity to revitalize the Glen Carbon spot presented itself, he couldn’t pass it up.

Pickering honed his hospitality skills over two decades in Chicago, Malibu, California and west-central St. Louis, building an extensive and culinary resume.

His dream of owning his own home took him back to the abandoned remnants of his old hangout, the Judy Inn. Peeling back six layers of flooring exposed the building’s original hardwood. Pickering recycled salvaged wood to create panels for new walls, and the addition of new bathrooms began to give the place a revitalized spirit while retaining the old saloon feel.

Pickering said certain features of the bar brought back memories of trips to the old family cabin with his grandfather and uncle. This prompted the old saloon to be renamed: dubbed The Cabin at Judy Creek.

And if you’re wondering who “Judy” is, Pickering also did some research and discovered it while not working late at night renovating the Judy Inn, which he opened seven years ago with help from his family and friends.

Pickering discovered that Madison County’s first permanent settler was Colonel Samuel Judy, for whom Judy Creek and the Judy Inn were named.
