TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Headed to the beach to rest and relax? You might want to broaden your search this year and look beyond postcard images of the country’s most well-known destinations.
Despite its many beaches with emerald-colored waters and pristine sand as fine as powder, Florida has only appeared once on Travel + Leisure’s list of the 25 best beaches in the United States.
Travel + Leisure ranked Clearwater Beach as the #5 best beach. According to the magazine, the best in the country is Poipu Beach in Kauai, Hawaii.
But don’t limit your search to Florida and Hawaii, as the top 25 list also includes a gem found in Colorado. But if you feel like avoiding the big trips, you can just head to the San Luis Valley, near the Great Sand Dunes National Park.
Medano Creek, which runs through the summer months, is created by runoff from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Travel + Leisure recommends planning your trip for a weekday in late May or early June.
The sand, waves, level of isolation, accessible parking, and even the number of shady trees factored into the ranking.

For the domestic travel industry, there have been signs of hope after a brutal winter.
US airlines said in late April they had seen a spring surge in bookings that offset January and February, when omicron-fueled covid cases spiked.
